Summer Construction: The Road Ahead

Summer break might be here, but that doesn't mean a break from road construction. Multiple construction projects throughout Central Texas are moving ahead as summer gets underway. We've done a roundup here of some of the bigger road construction projects to keep an eye on over the next month - plus information on how Movability can help employers and employees who are looking for better commute options for free.

The Big One: I-35

Capital Express South is the project most people will feel. The William Cannon Drive bridge over I-35 closes the weekend of June 5–8, from 10 p.m. Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, while crews set beams for the new elevated lanes. Expect lane reductions on the I-35 mainlanes and both frontage roads during that window, with detours routed onto the frontage roads. Overnight lane and ramp closures between Ben White and William Cannon will continue throughout the month. This corridor stays under construction through late 2028.

Downtown (Capital Express Central): The MLK Jr. Boulevard bridge is down to three lanes (two eastbound, one westbound) for roughly the next several months. The northbound Riverside Drive exit and Holly Street entrance ramp are now permanently closed for the Lady Bird Lake bridge rebuild, and northbound frontage-road traffic across the lake is reduced to one lane. Overnight mainlane closures near Oltorf to Holly are ongoing.

North: Frontage roads between SH 45 North and Grand Avenue Parkway are reduced to one lane in places as crews widen them. Activity here ramps up through 2026.

US 183 North

The long-running project connecting US 183 and MoPac is in its final stretch. You may still hit residual lane and ramp closures around the Steck and Far West area as it finishes out.

Loop 360

Work is now underway at RM 2222 and Courtyard Drive, where a new diverging diamond interchange and overpass/underpass are being built. Watch for intermittent lane shifts and overnight closures through this stretch. The first phase is targeted to open mid-2026.
