Gas price surge: an opportunity for better commute planning

It's hard to miss the steep climb gas prices have been taking lately, a trend that is predicted to continue. Yet the conversation has focused on how to find cheaper gas instead of looking at ways to eliminate or reduce vehicle trips.

What if communities - from policy makers to employers - took this opportunity to provide more transportation options beyond vehicles? Transportation demand management (TDM), which gives people more mobility choices, benefits individuals and communities by cutting costs associated with driving alone - as well as improving safety and environmental outcomes.

"Transportation Demand Management programs across the country can play a vital role in delivering cost-saving solutions to their communities through the provision of a wide range of TDM strategies," states the Association for Commuter Transportation. "The timing could not be more urgent as many large companies have announced their plans to start returning employees to their work sites over the coming weeks."
